Tideswell
Tideswell is a vibrant village of 1700+ residents located on the limestone plateau right at the heart of the Peak District National Park. It is surrounded by five national nature reserves and is a popular destination for walkers and holiday makers. It has had a long and illustrious history, boasting the famous 'Cathedral of the Peak' - it's large and stunning parish church which dominates the centre of the village. The village controlled the area's lead mining for centuries and has been a market town for the surrounding villages and hamlets for generations. In the Middle Ages, Tideswell was known as 'the King's larder'.
It's more recent history has been about change. The once busy high street has, over the past twenty-five years, lost over twenty shops and we're down now to a core of shops. Taste Tideswell was born out of the desire not to lose any more of our shops - lose one of them and we'd more than likely to lose the rest quickly.
The Taste Tideswell project was an idea born out of the community. How could the village benefit from a £400,000 BIG lottery grant? A variety of ideas were put forward but the overwhelming opinion was that Tideswell should build on what it was good at and not introduce a brand new idea for the sake of it.
